The Pirates League on Disney Destiny: From Little Cruiser to Full-Fledged Buccaneer

A Complete Review of My Son’s Pirate League Transformation on the Disney Destiny

If there’s one thing Disney Cruise Line knows how to do, it’s turn an ordinary activity into a memory your kids will talk about for years. Pirate Night was already exciting, but getting to watch my son, Blake, transform into a real little buccaneer at The Pirates League made it one of my favorite memories from our sailing on the Disney Destiny.

For a little one who loves dressing up and getting into character, this is such a fun way to make Pirate Night feel even more special.

What Is The Pirates League on Disney Cruise Line?

The Pirates League is a pirate-themed makeover experience offered through the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique on select Disney Cruise Line sailings. On Pirate Party Nights, the boutique transforms from a royal makeover salon into a place where young guests can become swashbuckling pirates.

The experience is available to guests ages 3 and older, and Disney Destiny is one of the ships that offers Pirate Night.

And this isn’t just about putting on a pirate costume. The Cast Members really make the kids feel like they’ve been recruited into a pirate crew.

Choosing Blake’s Pirate Look

One of the most fun parts of the experience is getting to create the pirate look.

Blake chose a full pirate costume complete with the classic pirate vest, red shirt and pants. Then came all of the accessories that really brought the look together.

He added:

  • A pirate bandana
  • A sword
  • A pirate hook
  • Pirate-inspired accessories
  • Dramatic pirate face paint

The accessories were definitely a huge part of the excitement for Blake. Once he had the sword and hook in his hands, he was ready to take over the ship!

The Pirate Face Paint

Then came the transformation that really made him look like a pirate.

Blake went with a more dramatic pirate makeup look, including a blackened eye and facial details that made him look like he had just come back from a pretty serious battle at sea. 😂

Watching him look in the mirror as the Cast Member worked was one of my favorite parts. You could see his excitement building with every step.

The makeup isn’t simply a quick face-paint application. It’s part of the character experience, and the Cast Members make the child feel like they’re actually becoming their pirate persona.

The Cast Members Make It Magical

This is probably what stood out to me the most.

The Cast Members don’t just put on makeup, hand over a costume and send you on your way. They become part of the story.

They talk to the kids like pirates. They joke with them. They encourage them. They make a big deal out of each part of the transformation.

And for a little kid, that makes ALL the difference.

Blake wasn’t sitting there thinking, I’m getting my face painted.

He was thinking, “I’m becoming a pirate.”

That’s the Disney difference.

It’s the same reason experiences like this can become some of the most memorable parts of a Disney vacation. The Cast Members take something that could be a simple costume and makeup appointment and turn it into an immersive experience.

How Long Does The Pirates League Take?

Disney Cruise Line recommends allowing about one hour for your overall visit, including arriving 15 minutes before your appointment. The actual Pirates League transformation takes approximately 30 minutes.

That makes it pretty easy to work into your Pirate Night schedule, but you’ll want to think about your dinner and evening plans when choosing your appointment time.

And remember: Pirate Night itself includes themed entertainment, dining and deck-party activities, so there is plenty happening once your little pirate is ready to go. On Disney Destiny, Pirate Night is part of the ship’s entertainment lineup.

How to Book The Pirates League on Disney Destiny

This is one experience I would not wait until you’re onboard to think about.

Disney Cruise Line says fully paid reservations can book Pirates League appointments when their booking window opens, and because availability is extremely limited, Disney recommends reserving as soon as possible. Appointments can also be made, changed or canceled online up to three days before embarkation.

Pirates League is offered only on Pirate Party Nights on select itineraries, so be sure to check your specific sailing.

Guests 17 and younger must also be accompanied by an adult, and Disney recommends arriving 15 minutes before your appointment.

Is The Pirates League Worth It?

For us, absolutely.

Could you bring a pirate costume from home and do your own face paint? Of course.

But that’s not really what you’re paying for with The Pirates League.

You’re paying for the experience. And once you get over the sticker shock, and trust me- there will be a shock, you realize it’s one of those experiences your child will remember forever. Blake has also worn his pirate costume literally almost every single day since we’ve gotten home for our cruise.

You’re paying for the Cast Members who make your child feel like the most important pirate on the ship. You’re paying for the excitement of choosing the look, sitting in the chair and watching the transformation happen. And you’re paying for the moment your child walks out of the boutique completely convinced that they’re ready to join the crew.

And then you get to spend the rest of Pirate Night watching your little pirate proudly show off their new look around the ship.

For Blake, that was the best part. He didn’t just dress like a pirate. He became one.

And that’s a Disney Cruise Line memory I’m so glad we made. ❤️
